BACKGROUND
This plant produces approximately 2 1/2 million uncirculated coins each year. They are Special Collectors Edition Coin Sets and are only available at specialty coin shops, home shopping networks, the post office, etc. These coins begin as blanks made from 3,000-7,000 lbs. of coiled metal. They are then cut and stamped with the appropriate design, date, etc.
PROBLEM
After stamping, the coins were hand-dipped in a DE-OX solution for brightening, hand-washed in a mild detergent, hand-rinsed three (3) times in DI water, and dried in a heated corn cob vibrating machine using dried corn stalks as the drying medium. Following these procedures, the coins are then inspected and hand-laid "head-side" up and sent to custom packaging to be wrapped in Mylar. The customer was looking to eliminate the amount of labor involved in getting the coins from coil to packaging. The proposed system had to meet the following specifications: a) an aqueous system with a DI rinse, b) capable of washing, rinsing and drying approximately 9,600 coins per shift and most importantly c) leave them shiny, spotless and without nicks or abrasions.
SOLUTION
A Cyclojet 3 was determined to be the ideal machine by the customer for several reasons: 1) it was capable of washing, rinsing and drying high volumes of coins (nearly 10,000 per day) to a challenging cleanliness spec.; 2) the four (4) basket design, in conjunction with Better Engineering’s patented autolatch rotor system, guaranteed the customer would never "lose" coins and risk jamming the machine due to an operator negligence; 3) it was capable of programming cycles in any sequence for additional DI rinses when needed; 4) the regenerative blower with a heat tube allowed for complete drying which eliminated the need for hand-wiping and inspection.
SYSTEM
A four (4) basket Cyclojet 3 with the following options: fresh rinse to drain, regen. blower with a 21 kW heat tube, PLC with a variable speed motor, and a strainer.
Note
After the machine was up and running, the customer realized a savings of 15 man hours per day.
