Background
This British company specializes in rebuilding rack and pinion steering units. They are known throughout Europe for their high quality products. As with most rebuilding applications, cleaning is a huge part of the process. They previously bought two (2) Better Engineering spray washers which they describe as “doing a great job and more then earning their keep”.
Problem
The two (2) BE spray washers clean the overall units when they first arrive. With this project, the customer wanted an automatic system that can remove all the grease inside the long cylinders (2” dia. x 30” long) which are closed on one end. They wanted to tear down a given unit, put all the parts in one basket, and clean them together.
Solution
Make a powerful spray/immersion unit that can accept a 36”l x 11”w x 9”h basket and rotate this basket on a horizontal axis. Heat the tank to 185-190° F/heat is critical for "melting out" the grease from the deep recesses of the cylinder. Have spray nozzles that blast water into the cylinders and which turbulate the immersion bath.
System
CJ-1 Cyclojet: enlarged to hold the above described basket, spray and immersion stages, all wetted part are stainless steel, 110g holding tank with 24 kW heat, 3 HP vertical, sealless pump outputs 65 GPM at 50 PSI.
