Challenge
A privately owned weapons manufacturer was expanding operations and needed to significantly increase production capacity. Their existing cleaning process could handle only 20–25 .50 caliber rifle barrels per shift and relied on a time-consuming acetone soak followed by manual wiping after machining. This labor-intensive approach created a bottleneck in production and limited the company’s ability to meet its goal of doubling output. To support growth while maintaining consistent cleanliness standards, the manufacturer required a more efficient and automated barrel cleaning solution.
Approach
A robotically loaded turntable parts washer was engineered to automate the cleaning and drying of rifle barrels. Because the barrels measured 46–48 inches long and weighed approximately 70–80 pounds, the system was designed with an extended 48-inch work height and a stainless-steel fixture capable of holding four barrels vertically around the perimeter of the rotating turntable. During operation, the turntable pauses at designated intervals while specialized wash and drying nozzles direct high-pressure spray into the internal diameter of each barrel to ensure thorough cleaning. The system also features adjustable spray pressure, an integrated heated air drying stage, and a sound-attenuating enclosure to optimize performance and operator comfort.
Results
The automated cleaning system dramatically increased throughput and streamlined the post-machining process. Cleaning capacity more than doubled, rising from 20–25 barrels per shift to 50–60 barrels per shift, enabling the manufacturer to meet its expansion targets. By replacing the acetone soak and manual wiping steps with automated washing and drying, the system reduced labor requirements, improved process efficiency, and delivered consistent cleaning results for each barrel.
Conclusion
By implementing a purpose-built automated cleaning solution, the manufacturer successfully eliminated a key production bottleneck while supporting higher manufacturing volumes. The robotically loaded system combined automated handling, targeted internal barrel washing, and controlled heated drying to create a reliable and repeatable cleaning process. As a result, the company achieved its goal of doubling cleaning throughput while improving operational efficiency and maintaining the high quality standards required for precision firearm components.
