Challenge

A space exploration agency required a reliable method to clean extremely large rocket components following metal passivation. The existing cleaning process was performed manually due to the size and weight of the parts, making it time-consuming, labor intensive, and potentially hazardous for operators. In addition, the components required a high level of cleanliness to meet aerospace quality standards. The customer needed a precision cleaning system capable of handling oversized, heavy parts while delivering consistent and repeatable results.

Approach

Better Engineering worked closely with the customer’s engineering, production, and quality teams to design a customized precision cleaning solution capable of processing large aerospace components. The system was engineered around a large rotating turntable to support the size and weight of the parts while ensuring uniform spray coverage during each cleaning stage. Multiple cleaning and rinsing cycles were incorporated to meet strict cleanliness requirements, and the system design included high-performance pumps, advanced filtration, and adjustable manifolds to accommodate components of varying sizes and geometries.

Results

The final system delivered a fully integrated precision cleaning solution capable of processing large rocket components with exceptional consistency. The RD-15000-PCS precision cleaning system features a 150-inch diameter turntable with a 120-inch working height and a load capacity of up to 15,000 pounds. A five-stage cleaning process consisting of wash, rinse, passivation, rinse, and heated drying ensures thorough contaminant removal. The system also incorporates three dual micron filtration units, multiple heated tanks, and vertical seal-less pumps to maintain solution cleanliness and system reliability.

Conclusion

The completed system provides a highly capable solution for cleaning large aerospace components while improving safety and operational efficiency. By automating the cleaning process and integrating precision spray technology, advanced filtration, and controlled drying, the system ensures consistent results that meet demanding aerospace cleanliness standards. The solution allows operators to process large, heavy parts efficiently while reducing manual handling and maintaining the high level of quality required for rocket component manufacturing.
