Challenge

A leading automotive powertrain manufacturer required a dependable and efficient system to wash and dry gears, shafts, and differential housings used within a high-volume production environment. The cleaning process needed to remove machining oils, chips, and contaminants while ensuring components were completely dry and ready for immediate downstream assembly. In addition to meeting stringent cleanliness standards, the solution had to integrate seamlessly into an existing work cell layout, maintain consistent cycle times, and support manual loading and unloading without introducing bottlenecks or unnecessary operator complexity.

Approach

Better Engineering engineered and manufactured two CAROUSEL C-5000-P-SS washers specifically configured for this demanding application. Each system incorporates a 50-inch diameter turntable designed to securely hold multiple components while indexing them through a sequence of heated wash, rinse, and dry stages within a single enclosed chamber. The front-loading design allows operators to load and unload parts from the same position, simplifying workflow and reducing material handling. Carefully controlled temperatures, spray pressures, and cycle parameters ensure consistent coverage and repeatable results across varying part geometries.

Results

The completed systems provide reliable processing of up to 16 ring gears, pinion shafts, and differential housings per cycle, delivering thorough cleaning and effective drying in a single automated sequence. The indexing carousel design ensures each part progresses through the wash and dry zones with uniform exposure, minimizing variability and enhancing overall part quality. Automated cycle control allows the machine to stop once components are fully cleaned and dried, providing operators with clear process completion and supporting steady production flow. The result is improved operational efficiency, consistent cleanliness standards, and reduced risk of contamination entering final assembly.

Conclusion

By combining robust mechanical design with an efficient carousel configuration, Better Engineering provided a practical and production-ready solution tailored to the customer’s automotive application. The CAROUSEL C-5000-P-SS systems support consistent quality, operator efficiency, and long-term reliability, reinforcing Better Engineering’s commitment to delivering engineered cleaning solutions that perform in real-world manufacturing environments.
