Challenge
Jet engine rotors present a unique cleaning challenge. These components are long, heavy, and geometrically complex, with strict cleanliness requirements tied directly to downstream inspection and performance. The customer needed to clean rotors weighing up to 1,500 pounds while maintaining precise positioning, controlled wash parameters, and repeatable drying results. Manual or generalized cleaning methods lacked the consistency, safety, and process control required for aerospace applications.
Approach
Better Engineering engineered a custom Impulse-55 aqueous cleaning system designed specifically to clean jet engine rotors in a horizontal orientation. Rotors are loaded onto adjustable pedestal fixtures with integrated rollers, which securely support and rotate each part during the cleaning process. The system incorporates a heated, recirculated wash stage followed by a heated dry stage. A high-capacity wash tank with pitched flooring supports effective drainage and debris management, while a vertical, seal-less pump delivers consistent flow and pressure throughout the wash cycle. Quick-disconnect manifolds allow the system to be configured for multiple rotor types, ensuring flexibility without compromising repeatability.
All wetted components are constructed from 304 stainless steel, and the fully enclosed, insulated cabinet helps maintain thermal stability and reduce ambient noise. Integrated controls, automated water level management, and closed-loop process control with robust filtration ensure that each rotor is cleaned under tightly controlled conditions suitable for aerospace manufacturing environments.
Results
The Impulse-55 system delivers consistent, repeatable cleaning and drying of aerospace engine rotors within a controlled, automated process. The result is improved process reliability, enhanced operator safety, and confidence that every component meets stringent aerospace cleanliness standards.
Conclusion
This Impulse-55 installation demonstrates Better Engineering’s ability to deliver highly engineered aqueous cleaning systems for aerospace applications. By combining precision fixturing, controlled wash-and-dry stages, and robust stainless steel construction, the system meets the exacting standards required for critical engine components. The result is a dependable, repeatable cleaning process built for performance, safety, and long-term reliability.
