Challenge
Aircraft wheel halves accumulate heavy residues such as grease, carbon buildup, and runway contaminants during operation. These components must be thoroughly cleaned before inspection, maintenance, or reassembly, but their size, weight, and geometry can make consistent cleaning difficult. The customer required a reliable system capable of cleaning multiple wheel halves in a single cycle while ensuring complete surface coverage and maintaining efficient workflow for operators.
Approach
Better Engineering designed a turntable-style jet washing system specifically configured for aircraft wheel cleaning. The system uses a 40-inch rotating turntable and a dedicated fixture that securely holds two wheel halves per cycle, with larger configurations available for additional capacity. When the door is opened, the fixture is fully accessible for loading. Once the cycle begins, the operator activates a jog switch that rotates the turntable 180 degrees to position the parts for washing. During the cleaning process, high-impact spray nozzles deliver heated wash solution from multiple angles, ensuring all surfaces of the wheel halves are effectively cleaned.
Results
The custom turntable washer provided consistent and repeatable cleaning performance for aircraft wheel halves while simplifying the loading and operation process for maintenance personnel. High-impact spray coverage ensured that contaminants were removed from complex surfaces, reducing manual cleaning requirements and improving overall process efficiency. The system’s heated wash tank and optional rinse and drying capabilities further enhanced cleaning effectiveness and reduced turnaround time between maintenance cycles.
Conclusion
The F-4000 jet washing system delivers a purpose-built solution for maintaining aircraft wheel components. By combining secure part fixturing, automated rotation, and powerful multi-directional spray coverage, the system provides dependable cleaning performance while supporting efficient maintenance operations. This design helps aviation maintenance teams maintain high standards of cleanliness, reliability, and productivity when servicing critical aircraft components.
