Challenge
The customer required a reliable system to clean car panels as part of their assembly line process in a new North Carolina facility. The key challenge was to achieve stringent cleanliness standards while integrating seamlessly into a newly established production line for a German-based automaker. The solution, Better Engineering’s monorail part washer, needed to ensure effective cleaning and part protection without introducing heat or potential damage during the drying phase.
Approach
A new cleaning line was designed and installed at the North Carolina facility to address the customer’s needs. The system featured a wash and dry monorail part washer that differed from traditional conveyor washers by utilizing a continuous loop, allowing for uninterrupted operation and consistent throughput. Recognizing the customer’s requirement for parts to remain cool after drying, the system incorporated ambient air drying instead of heated drying. An oil coalescer was added to the system, enabling continuous filtration of oils and supporting 24/7 operation. Additionally, plastic touch points were integrated into the hooks to prevent metal-to-metal contact, safeguarding the car panels from scratches and other damage during processing.
Results
The implemented monorail part washer delivered a unique and effective cleaning process that met cleanliness specifications. The continuous loop monorail provided the same functional benefits as a belt conveyor but with improved consistency and operational flexibility. Ambient drying ensured the panels were not exposed to heat, aligning with customer preferences. The oil coalescer allowed for uninterrupted, around-the-clock operation by efficiently filtering out oils from the wash system. Plastic touch points on the hooks eliminated the risk of metal-to-metal contact, further protecting the integrity of each car panel throughout the cleaning process.
Conclusion
The project’s success was driven by timely execution, clear communication with the client, rigorous testing, and delivery of a high-quality, tailored solution. The combination of innovative design, attention to operational detail, and focus on part protection resulted in a robust cleaning process that supports the customer’s assembly line efficiency and product quality.
