Challenge
A major Western U.S. engine rebuilder required a heavy-duty washing solution to keep pace with its high-volume rebuild operations. Their challenge was to efficiently clean oversized engine blocks, cylinder heads, and drivetrain components, some weighing up to 15,000 lbs, while maintaining operator safety, minimizing detergent use, and ensuring consistent, thorough results. Existing solutions lacked the capacity, automation, and durability needed for these demanding applications.
Approach
To address these requirements, the rebuilder partnered with Better Engineering to design and install three custom-engineered Purifier spray wash cabinets. Each cabinet was tailored to the rebuilder’s specifications, featuring:
- Working Capacities: Turntable diameters of 80″, 90″, and 130″, vertical clearance of 90″, and weight capacities up to 15,000 lbs. Ergonomic 32″ loading height for safe crane access.
- Rugged Construction: All wetted parts made from 304 stainless steel, with a sealed chamber and fixed turntable for safe, efficient loading. Lifetime warranty on key assemblies.
- Advanced Spray Wash System: 900-gallon heated wash tank with a powerful 50 HP pump delivering 200 GPM at 200 PSI, and 360° spray manifold coverage.
- Recirculated Rinse: 100-gallon tank with stainless plumbing, auto water level controls, and temperature maintenance at 140°F.
- Heated Drying: 15 HP regenerative blower and 45 kW air heater, with custom air knife layout for large parts.
- Smart Controls: Central NEMA 12 panel with 10” HMI touchscreen, 7-day/24-hour timer, and PLC integration for precise operation.
- Filtration & Oil Separation: Sediment trap, sloped tank floor, motorized oil skimmer, inline bag filters, and optional oil/water coalescer.
- Safety & Efficiency: Locking roll-in door, low water shutoff, beacon light alerts, sound control, and full insulation for energy savings.
Results
The installation of these custom spray wash cabinets has revolutionized the rebuilder’s washroom operations. Massive engine blocks and components are now cleaned faster and more thoroughly, thanks to the powerful 360° spray coverage and robust pump system. Crane-accessible loading at an ergonomic height has improved operator safety and efficiency. The recirculated rinse and advanced filtration system have significantly reduced detergent and water usage, while the all-stainless construction and Purifier filtration extend equipment life and reliability. The result is a streamlined, high-capacity cleaning process that supports the rebuilder’s demanding workflow and positions them for continued growth.
Conclusion
By investing in custom-engineered Purifier spray wash cabinets, this leading engine rebuilder overcame the limitations of standard washers and achieved new levels of efficiency, safety, and cleaning performance. The advanced automation, rugged construction, and smart filtration systems deliver long-term value and operational excellence in one of the industry’s most demanding environments.
